Jersey siren Dana Fuchs has successfully managed a versatile career to date encompassing music, theatre starring as Janis Joplin in an off Broadway musical, and film starring as Sadie in the 2007 Beatles movie “Across The Universe”. Long before Fuchs fully established her “barely able to contain herself” on-stage persona she was hailed as the new Janis Joplin. Obviously reinforcing the perspective was Fuchs’ Janis musical role coupled with her gritty vocals; but the budding similarities that tie her to the singer and the 60’s and 70’s era of Blues shouters started long before.
Raised in rural Florida, it all began at the age of 12 when Dana joined the First Baptist Choir in small African American church located outside of Wildwood Florida. Finishing high school, at 19 she made the bold decision to tackle New York. There she subsequently met her musical partner and soon-to-be cornerstone of her band, guitarist and song writer Jon Diamond. It was Diamond that helped her forge a reputation as one of the best live acts on the NYC Blues circuit.
Fuchs’ live performances remain her calling card – check out the video of her recent CD / DVD release Songs From The Road for proof – but her 5 CD’s to date prove she’s a force to be reckoned with in the studio as well. Primarily co-written with Diamond, all releases are well received by fans and critics alike. You don’t get the visual but you can’t help but be drawn in by Fuchs’ highly emotional and personal accounts of lost and misplaced love.
