Now you can add Jeremiah Johnson to the list of Mississippi Bluesmen. (Ironically, all share a connection with Texas; Allman was born in the state, and it was a stopping off point for both Zito and Johnson as they spent a considerable amount of time there honing their chops).
Jeremiah Johnson grew up with Blues as the soundtrack – his parents were huge fans – and continues to use the form as the root for his take on an eclectic mix of styles including Southern Rock and traditional Country. “Influenced by everybody”, Johnson started his musical trek fronting a hard hitting trio while holding down a labourer day job – a definitive blue collar approach to the situation that continues to this day. From the very beginning his sound featured his robust vocals and rock tinged guitar sorties against a backdrop of insightful original material. Never a purist, along the way, Johnson became intrigued with the prospect of expanding his musical horizons with the addition of The Sliders to the band. The Sliders, a duo comprised of local legends Jim Rosse on trumpet and Stuart Williams on sax, certainly add another dimension – especially live.
The Jeremiah Johnson Band with The Sliders’ “Texas Honky Tonk with St. Louis Big Horns” will be on full display at Violet’s featuring selections from Johnson’s 5 CD’s. Included in this mixed bag will be choice cuts from Grind, his latest release produced by Devon Allman.
