Malcolm Bruce
London based composer and multi-instrumentalist, (bass, guitar, keys, vocals), Malcolm Bruce makes his Violet’s Venue debut on Friday May 20th.
If the last name strikes a familiar note it’s because Malcolm is the son of the late bass virtuoso Jack Bruce. The elder Bruce came to prominence as a member of one of the first “super groups” – Cream; but his musical range encompassed and pushed the boundaries of a number of genres. Consequently, Malcolm has been immersed in all styles of music for virtually his entire life. He’s used that experience to distill all of the influences and find his own voice.

Malcolm Bruce has toured and recorded worldwide lending his talents to various projects be it recording with Black Sabbath’s Bill Ward or Jazz Fusion collective Brand X or composing works for theatre, children, or orchestral concert music. Not to mention performing with his late father, reprising his father’s role in West, Bruce Jr., & Laing, or performing with Kofi Baker, (Ginger Baker’s son), in Sons of Cream.
The diversity of these ventures works perfectly with Malcolm’s take that musicians should not be preoccupied with defined music categorization. Rather they would be best served by learning about all styles and genres presented to them and finding how their particular instrument fits cohesively in the overall concept of the end product. As Malcolm notes “it’s all down to the song”.
Bruce’s wide-ranging musical background and established talent makes his new project – his first full length album being recorded in Nashville and London – all the more interesting. And it should make for an exciting night for music fans at Violet’s.
